Located on Las Ramblas in Barcelona’s Old Town, Hotel 1898 is among the city’s most stylish offerings. The hotel is housed in the historic Compañía General de Tabacos de Filipinas, which was built in 1881 by the Catalan architect Josep Oriol Mestres. Its central location provides quick access to Barcelona’s public transport, and also puts you in walking distance of many of the city’s main tourist attractions, such Las Ramblas, Mercat de la Boqueria, Paseo de Gracia or the cathedral.
The building – restored by Núñez Navarro and reopened in 2005 as the current Hotel 1898 – is the only colonial-style hotel in the heart of Barcelona. Also known as H1898, the hotel is named after the year in which the last of the Spanish colonies, Cuba and the Philippines gained independence. History provides the backbone of the hotel, giving it a strong identity, marked by Maria Espeus’s spectacular photographs, which adorn its walls.
Hotel spaThe hotel’s meeting rooms are perfect for conventions, small meetings or private events. The facilities are complemented by an atmospheric bar and seven colonial rooms, replete with elegant old fireplaces and mahogany timbers.
Your stay at H1898 will be defined by personal attention from beginning to end. The check-in starts with a cava tasting, and later you can savour a dark, delicate rum while enjoying jazz in the lobby.
One of the many jewels in the hotel’s crown is the luxurious spa, which is located in the old vault of the Compañía General de Tabacos de Filipinas. A true oasis away from the hustle of the city.
At H1898 is you’ll sample Barcelona’s gastronomy at its finest, while admiring spectacular views of Las Ramblas.
Fancy a drink or dinner under the stars? Then H1898 also has La Isabela – a terrace located on the top floor with an outdoor pool, a solarium and panoramic views of the city’s skyline. It’s all part of the effortless sophistication that makes H1898 such an essential part of Barcelona.
